My dear,
In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love.
In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile.
In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm.
I realized, through it all, that….
In the midst of winter, I…
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

I was on my way to this gay gypsy bar mitzvah for the disabled when I suddenly thought, “Gosh, the Third Reich’s a bit rubbish, I think I’ll kill The Fuhrer.”

I owe so much to my grandparents. Through them, I developed my love of reading, learning, French, growing my own vegetables, cooking, baking, all things handmade, cycling, walking, dogs, bees, trees, old music, the seaside, and so many other things that I consider integral to my being. They have provided me with some of my happiest, most treasured memories. They taught me the value of honesty, respect, stability, humour and decency, they taught me to be unafraid of a hard day’s work and thankful for the rewards it could bring, and most of all, they taught me about the importance of love- the boundless love between family members, the faithful love of longtime friends, and the infinite depths of love which exists between two soulmates. They showed me the power of faith, believing with the entirety of their being that I could do anything, go anywhere, be anyone I wanted to be. Their unwavering encouragement, warmth and strength are eternal constants in an ever-changing, unpredictable world, an enduring reminder of the noble truths of life and love. As I have become older, our relationship has gained new strengths, deepening our bonds and the extent of our mutual adoration and respect. I honestly believe that their influence has shaped me even beyond that of the substantial influence of my parents, and for that I am infinitely grateful.
